Natural Bug Repellent Tallow Lotion — Safe for Kids, Effective on Mosquitoes

Description

Bug Away is our natural bug repellent tallow lotion for summer. We use it on our whole family — legs, arms, wherever skin is exposed — when we’re hiking our woods, at the park, or sitting outside in the evening. It’s built around a blend of seven essential oils in a tallow and organic castor oil base that absorbs quickly and doesn’t burn or irritate skin, including kids’ skin.

We’ve tested it through a Kentucky summer. Our most mosquito-prone child — the one who comes in covered in bites no matter what — had minimal mosquito bites last season using this consistently. One application typically lasts up to three hours. For longer hikes or extended time outside, we reapply.

The essential oil blend

Each oil in the blend is chosen for its insect-repelling properties: tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary, cedarwood, geranium, and lemongrass. Together they cover a broad range of insects. The blend is dispersed through the tallow at a concentration that’s effective without being harsh — it won’t burn skin or overwhelm with scent.

On ticks

We’ve found it effective at repelling ticks while hiking. We won’t claim 100% — always do a tick check after time in wooded areas — but it’s been a meaningful part of our outdoor routine.

How to use it

Apply to exposed skin before going outside. Reapply after about three hours of outdoor activity or if you’ve been sweating heavily. Safe for children.
